Welcoming CAB Group to Calkin

A company where the estimate has to hold up

CAB Group is headquartered in Örebro, where the business first started, with offices in Norway, Denmark, Finland and Germany. The company has 320 employees, and its products are used by around 7,000 companies and more than 85,000 users, who together handle 2.9 million cases a year.

The business spans vehicles, property and healthcare, and the company is owned by the insurers If, Folksam, Länsförsäkringar and Trygg Hansa.

When a repair shop and an insurer need to agree on what a claim costs, the estimate is what they work from. In most organisations the estimate is an internal basis for decisions. Here it has to hold up to scrutiny no matter who is looking at it.

What Calkin does

The difference between an estimate that is correct and one whose workings can be followed is bigger than it sounds. The first requires that someone did the maths right. The second requires that someone can see how the maths was done, long afterwards and without asking whoever built the file.

That difference is where we work. Calkin is an add-in that runs directly in Excel, reading a workbook and showing how it actually fits together, rather than how it appears to.

In practice that means seeing which sheets reference which, and where a formula breaks the pattern in an otherwise consistent column. It also means seeing which references point to cells or ranges that no longer exist, and which parts of the file nobody uses any more but everyone is afraid to delete.

No migration and no new way of working. Excel is still Excel. The difference is that the structure becomes visible instead of something you have to guess at.
